The Intensive Out-Patient Program

Charlie describes what to expect from the IOP counseling program

Intensive Out-Patient Program FAQ

WHAT IS AN IOP PROGRAM?

An IOP counseling program (Intensive Out-Patient) is used to address substance abuse and/or other mental health issues. The client gets intensive help in a group structure without having to live in the facility. Typically an IOP is required by the judge/prosecutor if there is significant evidence of substance/alcohol abuse. The next step up from an IOP is "In-patient" - where the client lives at the facility.

I DON'T WANT TO DO AN IOP

I understand. However, almost everyone that I've known who takes an IOP class ends up really enjoying it (and getting a lot out of it). I expect you will be pleasantly surprised.

WHO DO YOU RECOMMEND FOR AN IOP IN AUSTIN?

We recommend CROSS CREEK WITH ASCENSION SETON or THE ARBOR or POSITVE RECOVERY or AUSTIN OAKS. However, there are plenty of other good IOP options in Austin. Here is a PODCAST interview with an IOP counselor, John Andrews.

HOW DO I GET STARTED?

You need to call them and schedule an evaluation. The evaluation is about one and a half hours long. They will choose the appropriate IOP for you based on the evaluation.

HOW LONG IS THE IOP PROGRAM?

An IOP program is typically 5-8 weeks long. They meet 2-4 times a week for 2-3 hours each session. There are sessions in the morning, afternoon, and evening.

CAN I MISS/SKIP ANY CLASSES?

In general, IOP programs allow up to 3 excused absences. However, they usually have some flexibility for legitimate issues that people run into. It is ultimately up to the IOP program whether the absence is excused. If you miss too many classes, they can tell you that you need to start over again.

DO THEY ACCEPT INSURANCE? DO THEY PROVIDE FINANCIAL AID?

Yes, most IOPs accept most major insurance carriers. They also provide financial aid for people without insurance. Call them and explain your circumstances. They will let you know how much it will cost.

DO CLASSES START ON A SPECIFIC DATE?

No. Most IOP classes are ongoing. You can start at any time.

ARE THEY MEETING IN PERSON OR ONLINE?

Some are in person, some are on ZOOM. Call and ask.

SHOULD I GO INTO THE PROGRAM WITH A BAD ATTITUDE?

No, please. Give it a fair shot.

WHAT DO I NEED TO SEND YOU WHEN I COMPLETE THE PROGRAM?

When you complete the program, they will give you a certificate. Send us a picture of the certificate. If your counselor is willing to send us updates about your participation during the class, that can also be helpful.

I HAVE MORE QUESTIONS.
