Occupational Driver's License (TX)
Occupational Driver's License (TX)
Hi, I'm Charlie Roadman, Austin criminal defense attorney, and today we're going to talk about the Texas occupational driver's license: What it is and what you need to get one. An occupational License allows you to drive when your regular license is suspended. Now that can be because of a DWI arrest or tickets that you've received and been convicted of. There are lots of ways that licenses get suspended and an occupational license will allow you to drive anyway.
Now, in addition to the occupational part like employment, it also allows you to drive to work, doctor's appointments and any household duties, which I say is anything that's not entertainment related. Now, a judge must agree to an occupational license. They have to sign it. And different judges have different requirements. Different counties, some are more strict than others about what they'll allow. Now you'll definitely need SR-22 insurance, an AR driving record from DPS, proof of employment and clerks fees. That's part of any sort of occupational driver's license application.
And even when the occupational license is granted, there are limited times you're allowed to drive and sometimes in different counties you are limited too, or it could have an ignition interlock device requirement. There's a different type of occupational license that requires that. Well, I hope this helps. Give us a call if you have any questions.
